On a Windows 98se when the system is started even before I can see a POST screen I get one long tone and the the PC shuts down. This happend after the PC had been off over night. CMOS battery problem? Never be afraid to ask for help!

I had the same with an old PC I had to use because my regular failed.
I swapped the HDD to the old PC (100Mhz)and added a CD player to solve the HW problems.
Then at power on only a long beep until I powered off again.
Replacing the CD player fixed the problem.
Why? I really don't know.

Need more info. What type of Bios do you have, if you dont know what type of motherboard? If you know what bios look up the beep codes for that bios at Google or another search engine.

Fixed it. It turned out to be the fan for the processor. It was working, but it was now working at peak. OK now that you are scratching your heads. It seems that it had a buildup of dust which I assume was causing excess resistance on the circuit like a stuck motor. The motherboard said hey we have no fan shutdown before we hurt something. I removed the fan cleaned and lube it and now all is well. How about that!

Maybe this will help someone else?
