On-Demain E-mail Scanning is Slow

We are deploying ePO v3.6 to about 250 computers. The computers already have/had VSE 8.0i installed, but not the agent.

We use Lotus Notes for email. After deploying the ePO agent to computers located across our WAN we discovered that enabling on-demand email scanning significantly impacted performance on the client PC. (We did not realized that the original installation of VSE 8.0 had this feature disabled.)

The mail server is in a central location. Sites connect over the WAN at speeds from 256Kpbs to 1.0Mbps. I recently visited a site with 1.0Mbps connection and personally experienced the delay. Opening even the smallest of email messages would take 30 seconds. If I disabled the on-demand email scanning, that same message would open in 5-10 seconds.

I would prefer to enable the on-demand scanning, but the performance hit is unacceptable to our end users. (Messages with attachments can take significantly longer.)

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a Notes issue? Aside from disabling on-demand email scanning, are there other thoughts or ideas?

Thanks in advance!
