This has been bugging me for sometime (but I've just got around to looking into it). When I plug in headphones the Laptop built in speakers continue playing.
It's a Medion Laptop running Vista with Realtek HD sound card / Software.

I've tried updating the sound card driver, no joy. Poured over the control interface for options to change this, but can find none. I've searched for fixes on Google and nothing quite matches (or if it comes close then the fix still doesn't work).

I've run out of ideas. Can you help?

From what I found in other forums on the exact same issue, it sounds like you need to disable the auto port/jack detection option(s). This seemed to work (different options/settings for different chipsets) across a few different audio chipsets, including Realtek.

kjv1611, again thanks. Do you have any pointers on how I'd do that?

I didn't look for specifics, but it's an option under your options/settings menu. So, if you have an icon for Realtek HD next to your clock you can start there. Otherwise, check for Realtek in your start menu or in your control panel. For sure, you should be able to get to the settings/options by going to Control Panel - ...Audio Settings.. that's where you change all settings related to audio - speaker, headphones, volume levels, windows sounds, etc..

Have a look at the information in the later part of this thread. As well as some useful links concerning your sound problem it talks something called "UAA", whatever that is?

Are they USB or phono headsets.

On my laptop (XP) not sure on Vista, I had a simialr issue, under audio properties > Audio > Sound playback, as expected "Default device" was correct, with a drop down for the headset.

But the tiny checkbox "Always Use Default Devices was also checked"

This mean't when I plugged in my Plantronics USB headsets, it just completly ignored them.

unchecked the box, reinsterted headset and worked fine since.

Thanks all for the input but still no avail.

kjv1611,
I don't see any options to disable the auto port/jack detection in Sound options or the Realtek interface.

linney,
I've followed the links you provided and tried the suggestions given... no luck. although those threads seemed to be about a machine running xp (I'm on Vista, don't know how much difference this makes).

Sympology,
They're phono. and sadly I don't have 'audio properties' in the control pannel only 'Sound' and 'Realtek HD Audio Manager' neither of witch seem to offer the options suggested.

Most frustrating this.

Is there any Bios Update available for your machine?

I assume by "phono" you mean 1/8" stereo mini phone plug. Correct?

If you jiggle the plug/jack does anything happen? There is a physical shunt on many stereo 1/8" jacks that reassigns the audio from onboard to headphones. If you get any reaction, it may be a bad jack.

My motherboard had the same issue until I installed software I DL from the ASROCK website that allows me to control which 3.5 jacks I want to use and how they perform. I would check the manufactruers website to see if that option is included in the software drivers.
