Yes - find out which model you currently have by checking settings > about (if it's 1.x it's a first gen, etc.) - then download the latest update from apple and format from there. If trouble using the updater, when is seen as disk by the PC, do as ObviousTroll says and format as FAT32 from windows explorer, then run the updater. A hint - make sure the PC can see the ipod as a drive (not c or d, preferrably change the drive letter to something like i) - there's an article on apple site about problems with windows recognizing or trying to map as a network drive and not actually formatting or being able to do a music update.
