I think I already know the answer to this - but still I wanted to pose the question to see if there's a way to rig something up.

I have an old toshiba protege 610 laptop with a teeny screen that I hoped to be able to hook up to a monitor, but i see that it appears to only have a 25 pin parallel port, 9 pin serial port and some other kind of port (not a usb)that I don't recognize.

Is there ANY way whatsoever to do this, maybe with some kind of adapter? -

I ask b/c on the function keys there is the same little icon that my other newer laptop has which identifies the button to switch to the video - out mode - so why would that be there if it weren't possible in some way?

How much more water would there be in the ocean if it weren't for sponges?

Describe the other port - is it long and narrow with many connectors - perhaps for a docking station ?

As for your video options ? Can't say.

Maybe its like them Toshiba 'Librettos' where you have to put it onto the docking station to get the video out option?...

hmmm... not sure it's two levels each of 18 connectors (if i counted right) - appears to be a female end - kinda looks like below

kind of trapezoidal with two round things on each side - not as long horizontally as a parallel port, and slightly thinner vertically. It could have been for an old style docking station, because it looks a lot like the newer docking station ports, only a lot shorter horizontally.
