Hi all. I've been elected backup guy for our company (along with system admin, mac support, exchange dude etc etc) I've dedicated a server for arcserve. I have version 11.1 the Os is windows 2003. i have a seagate 1600 autoloader tape library LTO1. The problem is i'm so busy I've only had time to set up the tape backups quick and dirty. Full backups every night of our sql databases with the sql agent. Everything works fine until a tape fills up and i insert a new one to replace it. I format the new tape and name it the same as the tape I just pulled. At that point the backup fails saying media cannot be found. I reinventory and even re setup the device and have it auto detect the tapes. Any ideas what could be going on. Also one last thing. If someone would not mind taking the time walking me through the best way to do the backups, that would be greatly appreciated. I know full backups every night may not be the best way. i want to do a grandfather father son, but don't understand media pools or if i should backup all of the databases to that GFS set (now i'm backing them up to different tapes) anyway... help. thanks.

Do you have the tape library option installed?

I'm happy doing full backups everynight, until my time window gets too short. I see nothing wrong with it as long as it fits in the window.

Again please excuse my ignorance. I'm assuming it's installed. how would i tell? the backups run fine until I put in a new tape.

Go to control panel, add/remove programs. Do you see an Brighstor Arcserve Backup Tape Library Option listed? (Obviously, you don't want to remove it if it's there, this is just the easiest way to see if it's installed.)

In the destination tab of the job, just choose the device group and leave the media name empty (visible as a *). Then manually fill in the media name as you want it to be.
When ARCserve asks for a second tape just be sure there is an erased tape (ie. <<blank media>>) available. I think it will work now. Also try to find some time to find out how rotation jobs work. It will make your life easier.

regards
