Any ideas if MS Visual FoxPro is the right tool to get a relational DB (text, numbers, pics) on CD-ROM.

several queries needed, interface should be customizable to the customer's CI and most important:
NO INSTALLATION should be needed, this should run directly from CD.

(Of course no new data need to be putted in...)

While I have seen VFP run off a CD, it is possible that certain system .DLLs may need to be updated first. Depending on the OS, the state of it's updates and the version of VFP used, you may run, BUT it cannot be stated that the application could run on ANY system.

Note: I believe this is going to be true with any Window's application development environment (VB, DELPHI, VC++, JAVA, etc.).

Can be stated that it will run properly if the OS version is newer than the VFP version ?

Maybe, but unless you are using the most current patches for the version of VFP you are using, then you may run into VFP problems!

VFP 5.0a - 05.00.00.0415 [Oct 21 1997 13:31:18]
VS 97 SP 3
VFP 6.0 - 06.00.8961.00 [Aug 18 2000 07:32:53]
VS SP 5
VFP 7.0 - 07.00.0000.9262 [Jun 15 2001 03:00:13]

When you want to run VFP from CD, you will need to add the VFP runtime libs in the same directory as the exe, which would be on the CD.

So you will have to make a new CD to update your users when you have made changes to your program or updated to a new service pack, but then again, in this case any update would mean a CD.

Concerning the cutomizability of the interface, VFP is excellent in doing this. With dynamically putting on controls at runtime you can make any interface customizable to the user.

So the answer is actually yes. Weedz (Wietze Veld)

Thanks folks,

you were of great help for me, are there any beginner's tutorials on the net ?

I am familiar with using MySQL and PHP, but never did a desktop app before...
