Office XP, Word crashes when searching directory to open file

Howdy,

This is a strange problem. MS Word crashes when a user on a Windows XP Professional desktop with Office XP, opens MS Word and searches for a document in his directory (using file, open). When he uses the navigation bar to move throughout the directory, MS Word crashes. What would cause this?
