Office XP hangs on document close

One of my users is experiencing a problem when his MS Word XP will hang when attempting to close a document (and not even asking it to save). Sounds to me like a network share problem, but considering these files are less than 100kb and he is not saving anything to disk, what could be causing this?

I've heard the best solution is to uninstall/reinstall, but what do you guys think?
