My environment is a Win2k3 domain with 7 servers and 50+ XP clients, WSUS and Office 2003 distributed via GPO, no problems with either.
Today's (9-28-05) distribution of Office 2k3 SP2 installed on most clients without issue, but four of my IBM T42 laptops (I have more) and two identical Dell desktops (don't have the model info handy) all failed the SP2 install with error code 0x80070643.
Microsoft references article 836937 specifically for this issue:
The article lists 5 possible "methods" for resolution. Nos. 1-3, & 5 had no effect on the troubled systems. Method #4 directs deleting the contents of the hidden WUTemp folder on the hard drive root, except that this folder doesn't exist on my clients.
What I was able to find, however, is the hidden C:\WINDOWS\Installer folder. Some more digging lead me to C:\WINDOWS\Installer\$PatchCache$\Managed in which there is a folder named with a long hex string that is dated precisely the same moment as the failed installation attempt. Deleting this folder allowed the Office 2k3 SP2 installer to recreate it, and the installation proceded correctly.
Just wanted to post the info quickly since this is not documented in Microsoft's knowledge base (that I could find).
Bon appetite!
