Hi

I'm operating Outlook from Office 2000 on Windows XP. I recently installed a new version of Norton AntiVirus on my machine.

I have now noticed that although I attach a file to an email the attachment doesn't arrive. Apparently the email has a 'paperclip' showing but it can't be accessed.

Is it something to do with Norton - or has anyone any other ideas? This is driving me mad as I'm having to bring files into the office to send them to people whose addresses are on my home machine! This is inconvenience to say the least!

Thanks

Doreen

Norton might of altered some settings.

Are you using Outlook Express if so go to Options - Security and there should be a check box saying "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could be a virus" uncheck it.

Hope it helps.

Hi

Many thanks - will have a deckers tonight!

If its them having trouble receiving it it might be that setting at their end.

Also try dissabling outgoing email scanning in Norton should be in Options - Email tab.

An installation of Outlook that has all the latest security patches by default will not allow you to open attachments that end in certain extensions, in particular .exe files. This is occurs on the receiving end (you can send as many .exe files as you want). Since this is a security feature, you probably don't want to instruct everyone to turn that feature off. You may start seeing viruses circulating around as a result.

It's fairly easy to do a work-around. You've got two options:

1) Zip up your attachment and send it. Currently .zip files are allowed, though that may possibly change with this message.zip virus being circulated around.

2) Rename the extension of your file to something acceptable, or add an extra character at the end. Then you just need to instruct the recipient to rename it to the correct file name.

Hi

Still working on this! Doubt if it is the extensions, though - they are usually .xls, .doc or pdf - none of them seem to arrive.

If you install sp3 for Office 2000 it *should* change the security settings for attachments, and do away with this problem.

If not, manually create a security settings form and edit the registry of the local machine... Microsoft have the info on their site.
