We have a computer running Win 98 SE and using Office 2000 Pro. We have had no problems so far. All of a sudden (last week), the computer could not open any office documents. Upon searching, we discovered that office was not on the computer - it had been mysteriously removed. We re-installed Office and all was fine (Friday). This morning, they turned the computer on and could not access any office documents. Once again, it looks as if Office was uninstalled. Can anyone give any insight to this problem - is it a virus - has anyone ever heard of this?? "Try everything at least once."

I need to ask some dumb questions:

Was this under Start, Programs.... that you couldn't find Office, or was it under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office?

If you couldn't find it under C:\Prog.... than is it possible that the system is reverting to registry settings before installation?

If under Start, Prog.... is it possible that Office was installed for under one user's profile and another user cannot find it? (can't remember how 98 works)

Hopefully we can start there and try coming up with answers as we move along.

When we look under the C:\Program Files folder under - there aren't any folders or files (which is very scary) - both times. "Try everything at least once."

I take it you have done a search for winword.exe or other apps to make sure they didn't install somewhere else. If you have, at the moment, I am at a loss. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me could shed some light.

My theory is gremlins.

This is intriguing; if you find the reason, please post.

I had the same problem with Office 97 and PC-Cillin 2002 on Windows 98 SE. Just happened and I still haven't found the issue.

Since PC-Cillin is involved, it might be virus related. Children access this PC and download games, etc.
