My PC recently become very slow and unresponsive, Virus search was clean and no spyware found. Some icons on C drive desktop were grayed, also defrag froze when attemted. A lot of disk space is taken by Ffastun.ff1 ffx and ffo files, can be deleated?

Thanks everyone, cleaned the rubbish but PC refuses to run Defrag, it simply locks and requires a reset to start.

Reboot to Safe Mode - F5 - and defrag from there.

Andy.

Good one satrow; (have a newbie *)

Wackydj; Try Safe Mode for Defrag after you delete the below items I suggest

some more;
Delete your ShellIconCache file found in C:\WINDOWS..
Reboot...Actually Safe Mode should do this automatically.

Turn off ScreenSaver and Power Mngmt

Press and hold CTRL on bootup at the end of POST for Safe Mode and all other choices...One will be "Command Prompt Only"..

Boot to Command Prompt Only and type;

Code:
CD WINDOWS
DEL WIN386.SWP
This should delete your possibly corrupt Swap file..It's safe to do..Win will rebuild it.

If you've set the Virtual Memory to a fixed size or different hard drive look in the root of the drive, e.g. C:\ or D:\, etc.

Thanks everyone, Have now mannaged to DeFrag C and D partitions and cleared up Fastfind, the machine still appears to be running slow at times. When opening Outlook Express the Dial Up box takes about 2min to appear but then works OK. I have recently installed an optical mouse, would this have had an effect? Also receiving loads of Emails from known sources saying 'requested file attached' have not opened any of these as senders deny sending. Virus check runs clear. Any Ideas would be welcome. Wacky.

You seem to have a few separate issues to deal with...

It's unlikely the mouse is the prob. though if not installed correctly...it could have some conn.
Have you noticed the probs happening "right after" you installed it???
Did you "Remove" the Old Mouse listed in Device Manager first..????

The OE issue could probably be helped, by
Start >> Run MSinfo32
Tools >> IE Repair Tool
Choose "Repair" .....NOT Restore (which may be grayed out)
Choose OK
Run the repair tool and Restart....

What OS specifically and IE version?

(the following procedure will keep all your OE Address book stuff, though you may have to reset, some personal settings, so...think first and maybe backup your Address Book (.dbx and other files) and old mail you want to save..)
See for alot of OE questions.
See this for good overall Security settings in OE
See FAQ615-3144 for Temporary Files Cleanup
If you find Programs on your box you don't want...always "first" look in Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs for a listing and select Add/Remove..or Details to view more info if available (as from the Windows Setup tab).

More IE cleanup
In IE window go Tools >> Inet Options >> General Tab
(or Right click IE Desktop Icon >> choose Properties)
"Delete Files" from the Temporary Internet Files section and
"Clear History" from the History section
On the Advanced Tab....Disable both "Enable Install on Demand" settings for future crud blocking..
Go to C:\WINDOWS\Recent and
delete the files within....NOT the folder

One more thing *I do* before a Defrag is I go to C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG and delete ALL files , "Except OPTLOG.TXT"
(this has to do with Defrag optimizing programs to start faster....old files could be corrupted)

One more thing....you know all of this can get more complicated .....IF
* you have User Profiles (Diff. user settings) set up on the box.
* you have different OE profiles (in which case most personal settings and saved mail and Address Book will be in the /<profiles> or /<username> sub-directories)
* you have a ton of cookies (which store specific WebSite data, such as Log in passwords)...and saved passwords for User Profiles.
* are using AutoComplete in Forms and Web addresses and other settings listed in
IE "Content" Tab under "Auto Complete" and "My Profile"...
