Help! I had a serious virus infection on my server (some bobo shut down Norton!) and was forced to format the disks and completely reinstall NT4 Option Pack 4 and SP6 and Exchange Server 5.5 SP4.

The system had been working perfectly for almost 3 years with happy users and customers. The customers use Outlook Express to get their mail off my server. After the reinstallation (which went clean as a whistle, imagine!), everything works perfectly except for the offsite Outlook users. They get a message that says they can't connect to the server.

I have checked and rechecked all usernames, properties, permissions, box configurations etc. and it all looks good. The boxes can be opened up in my administration machine and I can send and receive mails to and from anywhere. The problem is that the boxholder can not access his/her mail via the internet. We are going nuts trying to find the problem and fix it, but the user patience is just about at an end.

The standard "resolution" offered is to "check with your system administrator to verify the configuration" but where does the system administrator go? Tek-Tips, of course!

I have Googled the thing to death, I have looked in all FAQ's, forums, MS Technet etc. and I cannot find the answer. I am getting quite desperate. Anybody out there know what I should do? Please e-mail me at tomspano@guateonline.com with any ideas. Thanks

Chris.

Indifference will be the downfall of mankind, but who cares?

Can they ping the machine by DNS, full DNS name and IP address?

Yes, they can ping the machine by IP address and Domain name. The domain also functions perfectly using the web browser (in our case, IE6). I have told them to use Outlook Web Access as an interim measure, and it is working fine. Interestingly enough, they have to use the identical username and password in OWA as in the former Outlook Express, but the stupid server just won't recognize the data in one but does in the other! Go figure!!!
