I was under the impression that the OEM Version of XP Pro had to bought with some type of Hardware.

I see that they sell it on Amazon and other sites without any other purchase.

If I install that on a computer, what is the drawback? From what I read on Amazon it's about the same, but the system builder is supposed to support it as opposed to MS I guess.

well the long and short of it is, that OEM version is good only on one computer and cannot be transfered. So if that computer fails that license stays with it. As far as support goes, that is what Tek-Tips is here for.

Should you purchase an OEM license version of XP?

Good link from linney.
But a couple of points to bare in mind.

1. If you are in the UK the difference in price between a retail and an OEM copy is far greater. I have see XP Pro retail at £269 (Staples) and OEM at £89.95. (a hardware purchase was required) here
2. With XP support ending, I don't see much advantage in the retail copy from that point of view.

So in the UK at least, any one thinking of (for example)downgrading Vista, would do well to consider the OEM Path.

Thanks guys. I think the OEM version will be the way to go here.

A word of warning here, I purchased an OEM version from ebay. After installing the software, I rebooted and got a message saying the OEM key did not match my hardware signature and gave me a phone number to call. So I called Microsoft and was told the software I had purchased was only authorized to system builders. I couild purchase a Microsoft upgrade or contact the seller. Bottom line, seller provided no assistance and my money was gone...
