I am using Windows XP and Outlook express 6 to download pop email via an NT server.

I can connect to the internet and map a network drive so there is no connection to the lan problems. I try and download and send pop email using outlook express 6 but it gives me the error message pop server not found.

How can this be? I have checked all the server names and the port numbers and it still doesnt work. It doesnt matter if you change to another isp address it wont connect to them either. I have checked all the proxy settings that i know of after all the internet works ok.

Please help me.

Can you ping the pop server from your location? joegz

i can download emails from all the other machines on the network no problems so i assume the pop server is working ok

ppabel1, thank you for the information however the information is not answering the question. The question is not does the pop server work from other machines but can you ping the DNS names of the pop server from the machine where it doesn't work.

You have to first establish if the machine sees the pop server IP address. So in a DOS or COMD prompt type in ping servername (where the server name is the name of your pop server and see if you get a valid response or a time out. joegz

i tried to ping the pop server using the name rather than the ip address, i get no response.

however i tried to ping yahoo.com and got no response either.

i think this is because i dont know the ip address

i can ping all local machines (ie machines on my network including the server) by using the computer name or the ip address

sorry for time wasting guys.

I have just realised what i was wrong. I had the proxy server set up slightly wrong but ive sorted it know. Thanks for your help joe

OK..so the pop server is outside of your network. That would mean that you are being blocked by the firewall (which would also explain why you can't ping the pop server or yahoo).

You need to speak to whomever administers your firewall about the issue then. Since you mentioned you can do it from other machines it is possible that the firewall is being restricted by IP address (i.e. static vs DHCP assigned Ip addresses). Either way the firewall administrator should be able to she some light into this. joegz
