rundown:
whenever i go to start a program launcher like Steam for half life 2, or the launchpad program for everquest 2 on loading graphics they both freeze up and crash out, another program is Azureus that uses java, the java part crashes out.
but.... the games run perfectly fine if i use the direct program file shortcuts via explorer.
system:
axp64 3400+ (512kbcache vs)
msi nf3 platinum mobo
2gb pc3200 ram
neopower 480w psu
geforce 6800gt
----------------------------------
when i first got this problem i swapped the ram sticks initially and out made sure the gfx card was firmly seated and it made no difference, I added a new ram stick in and still had the problem. Eventually did a complete system reinstall, the reinstall worked fine for a few hours but then the problem came up again. Then I borrowed a stick of ram from work and placed it in with the other 1gb stick and the problem cleared up for about 2 weeks and then started crashing those programs again, i had made no driver changes or hardware changes.
I can't check the cpu / mobo by swapping it out i dont have a spare, hard drive is the same no spare. Any suggestions?, i tried a few diff things, rolling back to previous drivers etc, but its totally stumped me because the games etc all run fine once you get them started.
Im wondering wether steam, azureus and the launchpad use java applets or some kind of java software and thats my problem, but it doesnt explain why it was working and then suddenly not again as of yesterday.
