I have a Dell PC that is about a year old. Recently, the PSU has started to make a strange crackling, static-like sound--actually quite similar to hard drive seek/access noises. It is not very loud, but constant from the instant the system powers on and it actually continues for a few seconds after power down for a few seconds before dying out. What can cause this?

The system is stock and definitely not overloaded. It runs completely stable and the PSU does not get even warm to the touch.

If your system is still warrantied, then make it Dell's problem. They usually don't question too much issues like that.. just sound like you know what you are talking about and they usually issued the RMA with no questions asked.

My guess would be that either the PS fan is actually contacting something (dust buildup or whatever) or the fan bearing has worn out. I agree that if it's still under warrantee, get it repalced because if it is a bad bearing, it won't get better.

Well the call to Dell was remarkably painless and they agreed to ship a new psu without much hassle at all. I'm actually surprised how easy it was. Dell support has my vote of confidence for now. :)
