odbc driver compatability question

is it possible to connect to a sql server 7 database with sql server 2000 drivers, using external system dsn. i have 2000 drivers on my system and need to access a older database. i don't want to reinstall my drivers. any advice would be great. thx.

can you think of another reason i may not be able to connect. i know the server address is right. and i know that the username/password is right - at least i can query the database from an ASP page. is it possible that my account permissions don't allow externally connecting from system DSN but do allow scripting access?
