ODBC connection with Access

Is there a way to maintain a constant connection between an Access database and another program without having to continually import the data and save it?

For instance, I imported some database records off of an AS/400 system into Access. I would like for it to do it automatically so I don't have to open Access each time and import the records.

Thank you.

The concept you are describing is called "replication", where the database engines automatically synchronize files stored in multiple locations. Since you are using ODBC to connect to the AS/400, I doubt that you'll be able to replicate directly to an Access database. Most database engines only synchronize to their own native file types. You'll need to look at the documentation of the AS/400 database provider to see what it's capabilities are.

I don't know your system so this might not be feasible but, could you not define the table on the AS/400 as a Link table via ODBC? Thatr way you would not have to import the data at all, just access it when needed.

I would agree with Marc that you need to utilize "linked" tables to the target AS/400 database. Typically AS/400 is running DB2/400 as the DB platform.

Assuming that your sys admin is permitting a "live" connection to the 400, you can readily read and update tables provided you are granted rights to the target tables

If ODBC connectivity to the AS/400 is an issue, check with NetManage, owners of Rumba connectivity software. I used to utilize this to manage tables in AS/400 through Access.
