NW6 hangs on restart/down

I have NW6 w/SP3 and all the latest patches.
After I installed SP3 my server consistently locks up when issuing a "restart server" or "down". It usually hangs after all the volumes are dismounted. CTRL+ALT+ESC does not work and I always have to resort to non-graceful power down (i.e. turn server off) to restart or shutdown. Any ideas as to why the server is suddenly not wanting to shutdown properly? Everything else is working fine and I can start the server with no problems/errors.

Any ideas?

what make of server is it

does it respond to a four finger salute
ie shift shift alt esc
then q
then y

also what about reset server (preferred option)

is there something wrong when you down or does this do this all the time - ie why are you downing ?

It is a dell poweredge 600 model with 2.53Ghz P4, 1GB DDR, linksys EG1032 nic (using the drivers that came with the card), adaptec 2100s raid adapter w/raid 1 using updated adaptec drivers, 2 seagate cheetah's in their own cooling bays (18gb each).

I have not tried the shift-shift-alt-esc (debugger) method to shut down - will try that this weekend. I won't be in the office until Saturday.

there is really nothing wrong when I was downing the server - just moving the hardware to a new location. I don't normally down the server frwquently but I do restart when applying patches, etc like you would normally do. Ever since I installed SP3 I have been having this issue and it consistently locks up every time. Before installing SP3 I was able to restart/down/reset/reinitialize with no problems.

thanks,
john

the 4 finger salute isnt that graceful either
it's not that much better than a hard turn off
but you should nearly always get it

i've seen this once before on a compaq 370 g2 - it would never come down but never really tried to get to the bottom of it
it was at the exact same bit just after disks dismounted

then slugged -

There is more than likely a problem with DS or a device driver.

Ensure you have a good NIC drivers, don't trust Lynksys my self (I thought dell installed 3Com or Intel NICs into their servers?), don't allow the NIC to auto configure, hard set it to the settings you want. If all else fails, change duplex to half.

Re order the security files in autoexec.ncf
LOAD NICISDI.XLM s
LOAD SASDFM.XLM
LOAD SAS.NLM
LOAD PKI.NLM
LOAD NILE.NLM
LOAD HTTPSTK.NLM /SSL /keyfile:"SSL CertificateIP"
LOAD PORTAL.NLM

Run a full NDS health check; this TID will give you an idea of how to do it.

The Linksys card did not come with the Dell - this is something I swapped out to upgrade from the standard 3COM 10/100Mbit to 1000Mbit.
I'll double check the drivers - I just checked Linksys and they still have the same driver set on their website that shipped with the card. I should also point out that the drivers are actually NW5 drivers although they seem to work with NW6 (or not?!) I do have the NIC paramaters hard set and it is running at full duplex.

Thanks for the tips - I will give all of this a try.
