Nw51sp6 problem with MS Excel 1

I applied Service Pack 6 to my Netware 5.1 servers this past weekend. The only problem at installation was the GroupWise POA rejecting the TCP/IP stack. I fixed that by putting TcpIp 5.81p on from Novell's download site.

Came to work Monday morning and the main file & print server was running 33% utilization. Workstations started to hang up & users began calling. After re-booting the server (0% utilization), I did a little experimenting and discovered that MS Excel is the culprit. When an attempt is made to save an Excel document to a network drive, the pc hangs and utilization shoots up on the server (and the document gets corrupted).

My quick fix was to backout the service pack. I don't have anything else to go on except Novell TID 10065560 concerning poor performance accessing Microsoft Office docuemnts on a Novell server (not hung workstations all over the network and high utilization on the server).

Has this happened to anyone else out there with Nw51Sp6? Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
Lolared

Have you got File Caching switched off on the server?

SET CLIENT FILE CACHING ENABLED = OFF

I do now [grin]. I tracked down the issue relating it to anti-virus programs. The funny thing is, I'm sure I had that command in my autoexec.ncf file before I applied the patch. I read somewhere during my research today that some patches may re-enable client file caching.

Thanks, TheLad, for responding so quickly.

I'll be re-applying the service pack tomorrow night and checking the client file caching setting afterwards!
