Just installed a new DELL 3.0Ghz, 4gb system.. Running NW5.0 (Upgrading the OS was not an option for my client). Anyway, all is good except that when the server first comes up, the Utilization pegs to $50-75% for about 5-10 minutes. Then it will drop to 1% and appear to run normal from then on. I've watched it and noticed various things on the top of the high utilization list -- nlslsp, timesync, etc. But most of the time it's just SERVER xxx which generally indicates a client connection. But the server is not in production yet so I'm not sure where that would be coming from.

My main concern is that when I put it into production, the server utilization may start spiking again for no apparent reason.

The server has NW50SP6A, plus some additional patches including OSPt5a, ts524o, WSOCK4F.

Has anyone seen this behavior, have you had any ongoing problems because of it, and have you seen any solutions.

Thanks.

not seen it but i havent used 5 for about 4 years

also only ever used dell once - seen this behavior on a compaq and it's normally a monitoring agent - but normally the tape drive but this will be unlikely here as it's not in use

I found that the NIC was not negotiating correctly with the switch and I was getting tons of packet errors. Once I got that resolved, everything has been working really well.
