Numbering problem in Word 2000

Hi there

I have a baffling problem using Word 2000 on a laptop.

Quick Details:

Windows 2000
Office 2000
Dell C640 Laptop
*****************

Basically, when I use the numbering feature it doesn't work as expected. For example:

I want the following situation:

1
1.1
1.2
1.1.1
1.1.2
1.1.1.1
1.1.1.2

However, I can't get it to work like that. After putting in 1.1 and pressing return it returns different numbers. I have copied and pasted a small section I made up:

1 Test
3.3 Test
3.3 nk
3.3 fgh
3 gl
3.3 hj
3.3 jk
4 dhtj
5 xfgh
6 f
3.3 hjhj
6..1 fhk
7 hjk
8 jkl
3.3 vfhj

?? Note the numbering..... It keeps changing to different numbers? I then click Format>Bullets and numbering>Outline Numbered tab. It looked wrong in there too. I have a screen dump but cannot show it in the thread!


Sorry but this is hard to explain. Any suggestions?

So far I have run a detect and repair and reinstalled office.
Note: this is a work pc

Hi,
Have you tried applying the number format from the Format | Bullets and Numbering | Outline Numbering dialog box?

Have you tried using the format painter (the paint brush). Copy the number, then click format painter, then apply this by selecting the 'target text'. You *should* then be able to use the indent button to generate the additional levels.

I managed to resolve it by reseting all options from the Format | Bullets and Numbering | Outline Numbering dialog page.
