I am tring to share a folder on a WinXP Pro PC with multiple computers in my office. I am mapping this folder as a drive on the other computers to simplify things for my users. I appear to have reached a limit on the number of users (10) that can access the shared folder on XP. This was not a problem on the the Win98 computer that I replaced. Is this a "real" limit in XP and does anyone know a work around?

Yes it is a real limit. With NT/2k/XP you need the server version (well 2003 for XP) to break this limit.

Lots of similar posts - one recently where original poster found a hack to get round this (may have been 2k rather than XP - but similar). Not condoned - as breaking licence - but as mentioned by others & yourself, its not a limit on 98 - so why should it be on XP.

Thanks for the reply. If you remember the thread date, I would like to take a look at the hack. For the money I will just go back to Win98.

Duplicate your folder(copy and paste), and then name them in sequence, for example, (music, music1, music2, music3, ect.) Then share them, and now you are able to have 40 or 10 per copy access the same folder. Updating each folder could be a job depending on your needs, but it is one way around the limit.

jak659,

If I understand your tip correctly I do not think it will work.

It is not 10 connections on a share; it is 10 connections for shares.

In other words if I connect and map to 13 shares, windows doesn't care. It is one connection. But if more than 9 other people try the same thing Windows will start blocking them.
