Hello all

I have a couple of questions. My first question is we have an domain controller synchronising with an external time source using the Network Time Protocol on domain 1. Can domain controllers on the wan synchronise with this domain controller if they are in a differant domain?

My second question, if this is possible can a client synchronise with the local DC, rather than the DC using NTP

Thanks in advance

Hello Clayton,

there is one domain controller that is responsible for the NTP, it is the DC that owns the fsmo role of PDC emulator, you should memorise this.

So, by default your domian servers and clients will use the DC with the PDC emulator role as their NTP Server, but you can change this behavior.

To change this behavior, you must change the registry as follows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>Services>W32Time>Parameters

Edit or insert the string Value NtpServer and in Value data insert the NTP Server that you wich to set (must use the fully qualified domain name).

Doing this, will answer your two questions.
