NTLDR is compressed

This morning I had trouble with an internal modem on a Windows 2000 pro machine. I powered down and took the modem out and then restarted the puter. Up came a blue screen message "STOP 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0xED0808D3, 0x00000000, 0x0000000C)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED". When I searched for a solution I found MSKB 302971 which suggested I have the wrong version of the logitech mouse driver. When I attempted to resolve this in Recovery Console, I got a message "NTLDR is compressed".

where it was suggested to perform the repair procedure. However after putting in the 4 startup disks and my Emergency Repair Disk (updated only last week), I still get the "NTLDR is compressed" message.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it bad news for the MBR or the drive? Or is it even a virus issue?

Try and copy that file from the I386 folder. Boot your machine to command prompt and then copy the NTLDR file from the cd rom (i386) to where the NTLDR file is from. It's worth a shot because I had one server that it had a corrupted NTLDR file and this is what I did and it worked.
You will have to do this at the recovery console.

The problem is that I cannot get into Recovery Console, as the NTLDR message comes up right away. I have tried getting to the Recovery Console through both the boot menu and through using the boot disks and selecting R for repair, C for Recovery Console.

What about getting a disk that boots up and accesses the NTFS folders to perform this copy function?
