hello all,

i'm not sure if i'm posting this on the right forum but here it goes...
i'm have a 2000 active directory in mixed mode (with 3 nt backup domain sever still on-line). my question is i just noticed that when i launch active directory users and computers console then go to the domain controller folder to see the list, i see all my domain server (nt & 2000) but there's one object with the name "NTDBC". obviously, i don't have any server in my domain with that name and i'm just curious what it is. is it supposed to be there because i'm still in mixed mode with 3 old nt backup domain server still on line? will it get deleted or go away automatically once i go to the native mode? i'm not having any problem on my network but if you have any info on this, please let know.. any help is appreciated...

Do you see that same object as a computer in the Domain Controllers container in AD Users & Computers?

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Mark

yes. i see it as a computer object in the domain controller folder as if i have a server with this name in my network.

Remove that object and also check your DNS and remove entries there.

As a final check, run the metacleaner script in my FAQ faq96-4733 to ensure that AD has no reference to it. This is probably from an old BDC that never was properly removed.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

hi mark,

thanks for the quick reply post. i've been managing this network before the windows 2000 AD. as a matter of fact i did the migration itself from NT to 2000 AD. so i know for sure that there never was any old nt bdc server that was remove at any time. like what i've said the 3 nt domain controller servers that i have prior to the migration are all still on line. i haven't done anything to it or remove it because there are still some softwares that we use that needs to be taken out first. so again, i know for sure that there's no old server that got deleted or anything. i'm not having any problem on my network, browsing or anything. no error messages on any logs that may lead me to think that there's a problem. it's just weird and i wasn't sure if it's normal being in the mixed mode.

I can't speculate how it got there, but the fact that it is in AD Users & Computers confirms why it is showing up in your AD as a DC. If it is not a real server it can and should be removed to avoid any replication problems.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Mark

thanks again mark. i will delete it but i think i will wait until all my other bdc's are gone just before going to native mode. i'm just afraid that if i remove it now it may give me some problems and headache afterwards.
thanks for your help!!!
