NT4 Patching Problem

I have an NT4 (SP6) server running an internet application. We bought it IN '99 with NT pre-installed from Dell and it has never been reinstalled/reformatted. Patching has been kept up-to-date until recently. Now when I attempt to install a patch (e.g. blaster worm fix) I get the message "Unable to determine product type". The install fails whether I run from the web page or download the .exe and run it. MS web site search of the exact phrase produces nothing. It appears to think (or what passes for thinking) that NT has been tampered with. Anyone know what's going on here?

Thanks,

If this is not too obvious - check\remove any spyware.
I use ad-aware by LavaSoft.

Try Search and Destroy (do a search on Google).. it blows adware away.

I have installed and run both Ad-aware and spybot on it and have cleaned up what it found (not that much) but the error still comes up when I try to install MS patches. (Unable to determine product type).

The problem is that, as with so many MS problems, the error message doesn't even hint at what is really wrong, leaving you to guess or to find someone with more experience with NT. I did the latter. Apparently lack of space on the C: drive was the culprit. I had between 60 and 100 MB free, but this isn't enough. By relocating the paging file I was able to run the updates with no errors.

Hope this helps someone else down the road.

HCEONETMAN.
