I have an NT4 DHCP server that was a pdc that was running wins and it failed. I promoted another BDC to a PDC and installed DHCP but not Wins. Now my users are losing their network connections due to a timeout error that the domain is not available. If I remove wins is that a problem?

Here's a star dk87. To elaborate, wins are needed for any systems running pre w2k operating systems. DNS does the work wins did on all w2k and later os's. Windows Internet Naming Systems was replaced by Domain Naming Systems. Yes, you need to install WINS, or update the NT4 box to W2K, which might be a better way to go. W2K is much more robust than NT, and MS is going to retire support for NT4 in stages. Check out Retiring Support Good luck.
