We have a Dell PC that has NT 4.0 installed on it. The machine would not boot after only three days of use so we installed it as a slave drive in another machine in order to recover the data files. In trying to "look" at the file system (it was in another NT box) we went to disk administrator and got a message indicating an error with the signature. We allowed it to write a new signature and the machine could then see the NTFS file system on the partition of the drive. We recovered all files and put them on another machine. After re-installing the drive in the original machine we tried to boot it and it worked fine. That was yesterday, today the problem has returned. What makes the signature get lost and is it an indication that the disk is failing?

One big reason is a virus. Another could be the removal of a virus or an innoculation of the boot record. There is a utility called disksave that you can use to save the boot record to a floppy and then if the error happens again restore the boot record by booting the floppy and using the utility.

I would not think this would be caused by a hardware problem. Is there any Anti-Virus software running on the unit? Was the computer being used by someone else or was it under your control from repair until failure? If used by someone else see if they accessed any floppies and if so check those floppies out with a current Anti-Virus package with up to date engine and DAT files.

What is the symptom of the failure, other than will not boot? Any errors? When does it occur?

Doug
dxd_2000@yahoo.com
