I have NT workstation (SP5 installed)running on a Compaq Armada E500 laptop and it is not shutting down properly. If you do "Cnrtl, Alt, & Del" to shutdown the laptop, it appears to shutdown but then re-starts. I have checked the "Shutdown" option from the start menu and it still doesn't shutdown without restarting. I have tried all the patches for shutdown problems. Is this a Registry problem, and if so how can I find it and fix it?

You may want to check your BIOS settings. Some have an On Shutdown entry. I doubt it is the problem but it might be worth your time.

You can give this a try.

1. Start the registry editor (REGEDIT.EXE)

2. Goto the Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

3. If the value PowerdownAfterShutdown exists change it to1. Go to step 5

4. If the value does not exist add it as type REG_SZ and set to 1
5. Exit the registry editor

ou will need an ATX power supply and an updated HAL.DLL from the computer manufacturer in order for this to work, otherwise the machine will just reboot.

Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 and above ships with a file, HAL.DLL.SOFTEX which works on many systems.

To install the new hal.dll from the updated ServicePak do the following.

C:\> cd %systemroot%\system32
C:\WINNT\system32> rename hal.dll hal.old
C:\WINNT\system32> copy x:\i386\hal.dll.softex hal.dll
