We have an old Windows NT workstation that is a voice/phone recorder that records all phone calls on 10 different lines(Audiolog).
While attempting to get this PC visible on our network, it seemed that the network card wasnt working or maybe the driver wasnt loading. I changed the startup setting from "Automatic" to "System" and now I get the BSOD on boot. Is there a way to fix this from the boot floppy or DOS?
I dont know squat about NT and this is going to be a very expensive mistake if I cant get it back up and running.

BTW...I already tried VGA and Last Known...neither will work.

What file(s) does the blue screen say caused the problem?

You could try to take the network card physically out of the box and then try booting. If that works, then try installing a different NIC.

I'll try to reboot it again...I believe it said something about ntoskrnl.exe but I'll look again to make sure.
I forgot to mention I tried removing the NIC yesterday, still BSOD.

BSOD is a little off to the left of the screen but I believe it says...

CK(?)Mode_Exception_not_handled
Address 8011f5a2 has base at 80100000 - ntoskrnl.exe

At this point, I would try one of two things. The first, I already suggested - remove the card and reboot. The other would be to boot up using something like UBCD or ERD commander that will let you undo that setting - these utilities allow you to access NT services.

However, ntsnorkel errors are typically pretty bad and require an NT repair, which in NT 4.0 doesn't always fix your problems permanently. If you get everything up, even temporarily, I'd say get the needed files off and migrate your voice recording system to another box.

I finally got this machine back up and running. It didnt have a cd drive (floppy and 2 sided dvd) so I temporarily installed one and tried several things...UBCD wouldnt boot up, Bart PE wouldnt boot, my Win NT disc would work and I got into the repair section but didnt change anything because saving this machine without re-installing anything was a priority.
A local tech told me that you could use the recovery console from Win 2000 CD...I used the recovery console to first run chkdsk on the drives and then to disable the tcpip service and it booted right up after that.
I have it on the network now but that may change...I was able to join to the domain this time, which hadnt happened before so maybe it will stay this time.

That's good. Sorry I wasn't able to help. I am going to give you a star, which is ironic because you started this thread, because I never knew you could use the Win2k Recovery Console in NT 4.0.

Thanks Chip, I didnt know you could use the Win2k Recovery Console in NT 4.0 either but it sure is good info to have. I appreciate all your suggestions...I didnt have access to ERD Commander or I would have tried it too.
