NT Server Boot problems

Hi, I inherited an old NT Server that the user would like to recover some files from it. When I power it up all I get is a slash screen "see attached". It's got a bank of 5 drives connected to a SCSI card. Any suggestion to get this thing to finish booting?

It looks like it's just hanging at the main screen and won't allow you to go any further. Do you have options to go into the BIOS? You can try booting with a WinPE or Linux Recovery CD and attempt to mount the drives and copy the data off them.

No BIOS options available so far. What is a WinPE disk?

Thats not even getting past the post, this isn't an NT4 issue but more a hardware issue.

You have a couple of options, fix the hardware issue (I would reseat everything you can, clean out everything that's got a build up of dust and seeing how far it goes after that) or you could see about daisy chaining the disks off a scsi controller in a new box and getting the data off that way.

If the machine won't even post correctly then you're out of luck doing it on that hardware but you 'should' be able to do it using other hardware.

**** IMPORTANT **** You may well have to get a SCSI card of the same type due to the fact that it's probably a raid controller rather than straight scsi, if you connect up the drives to a different controller card in the wrong order you run the risk of losing everything on them. This is something that needs a lot of thinking about **** IMPORTANT ****

OK, I removed the bank of drives and SCSI card out and into another PC. It recognized the 5 drives and started to boot to NT4.0 and then blue-screened. See attached photos. Any suggestions on those HAL errors?

Still unable to get the command line of the bank of 5 drives. I may need to find a box with dual proccessors to attach too.

Or, you could return to the original post from ITSP1965 and use bootable Windows CD.

You can boot mini-WinXP from that CD and get to needed files. You can copy them to another drive or to a network share.

The CDs I personally like are Winternals ERD2007 and Hiren's BootCD.

ERD was on Microsoft site as a free download for some time, then they took it off, but you can still find it by googling for "erd2007.iso"
