First started happening on shutdown, gets to the saving data to disk message and then all disk activity stops, the message disappears and it just hangs.

Intermittently over the last few months it has ocasionally hung at any given time (no pattern i can see) which meant that the mouse would still move, the keyboard lights still worked but only the app in focus could be selected (but not used :)

Its pingable from any client but Exchange and Home Dirs are inaccesible.

One point to note is that generally when it hangs, the raid disk lights stay lit. either all 3 (not inc redundant) or just one of them. This 'hanging' can also occur on logon or whilst on blue boot screen.

HI!

The disk array is the first suspect.
Check the system event log for SCSI TIME OUT red errors.
Describe your RAID configuration.
Problems with the RAID controller can cause some errors like files and folders being missing or corrupt.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD FULL BACKUP!
AND ANOTHER ONE!
AND AN OFFLINE BACKUP OF EXCHANGE in addition to the normal backup!

One of the recomended actions for my opinion is to take a new EIDE (yes EIDE) hard disk and to place it instead of the RAID ARRAY until you troubleshoot and fix the problems.
If the problems stop - you know better where to look for solution.

One more tip - in system properties in the last tab, disable the memory dump on crash. This will save you some time and nerves..

Bye
