I am confused about the NT server license and wondering if any one out there can help me.

Our company has an NT server with 30 licenses purchased. Loaded on the server is a Citrix program with 15 licenses.

Here are My questions:

* How many pcs can get access to the server(30 or 15)?
* All pcs have their own operating system(Win95, Win98, WinNT4.0 workstaion), do I need extra licenses purchased for those pcs to access the NT server(Client Access Licenses(CAL)?
* Is CAL for NT Server or for pc?

Thanks a lot.

MS licensing can be confusing. You have 30 CALs on your system. That means you can have 30 concurrent connections to your Server at 1 time. When you purchase CALs they are for ACCESS to the server. Not for the PC's. All PC's connecting, no matter what OS is on them need a CAL to access the server. So if you have 60 PC's you would need 30 MORE CALs for the server totalling 60. The 15 Citrix licenses is only for Citrix. Not only would Citrix need a license for a PC to access it, but you would also at the same time need a license for server as well. So 2 licenses would be needed. 1 CAL for server and 1 license for Citrix. Make sense? James Collins

Also, since the users are not running Win2K or XP, you will need a Terminal Server CAL for the users.
What is your e-mail, if you don't mind, I have a 4 page doc I created on licensing if you would like a copy of it. Mike Brown CCA

mjbrown. He is not using Terminal Services. Citrix is what is being used. With Citrix they do not need TS CALS. James Collins

That is incorrect seeing that Citrix runs on Microsoft Terminal Services. I have posted a DOC in the FAQ section of the Citrix Forum stating how the Licensing works. This comes from Microsoft as well as Citrix. Mike Brown CCA

I apologize then. I have not seen Citrix. I was unaware it ran on TS. Thanks for the info. James Collins

Thank you ALL. The information is very helpful.

Also, I am looking for the place where I can get more NT CAL licenses. The place that I contatced told me that Microsoft discontinued NT licenses and we need to get Windows 2000 licenses instead. Is that true?

Yes, mjbrown, I would like to review the DOC that you have created. Here is my e-mail address: chen@choiceonemail.com

Again, thank you all very much. (:I

Microsoft is stopping support for Windows NT4 by 2003. It may be true that you cannot get anymore licenses for NT4. If that is the case you may be force to upgrade to Windows 2000. I checked with our distributor and he cannot get NT4 licenses either. So it looks like you may be stuck unless someone out there still has CALs for NT4. James Collins

You have to buy Windows 2000 CAL's, these are down-gradable though i.e. the can be used for previous versions of the software.
Same for most of MS licensing, I am running Office 2000, but am buying office XP licenses.

I thought that was only for corporate licensing program? Is that what you are on? James Collins

Yeah I have a select agreement. But if you buy your CAL's off a reseller, it wil be the same. (used to do this before moving to select)

From the messages above, I understand that more licenses needed for all PCs access to server.

What about the server license? use above situation as an example: if there are more than 30 people connecting the server at the same time, do I need to purchase more licenses for the server? If yes, is the server CAL license same as the pc CAL license? If no, how the reseller would know the distinguish between server CAL and pc CAL? [sad]

Your time and help are greatly appreciated!!!!
