Hi,

I am receiving the following error message in the event log of an NT4.0 server SP5.

The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NwlnkIpx. The backup browser is stopping.

The server has only 1 NIC and is acting as a BDC in an NT and NETWARE environment. Any advice appreciated.

Is this server incharge of backing up your Network? It looks as if it is. The backup browser I'm assuming is the browser used by your backup program to browse and backup your data from the netware server, the backup list it is refering to would most likely be the selected items for backup, there are two things you can do to resolve this;
1) cancel the backup for Netware from the NT box, probably not your #1 choice.
2) Get a second NIC, assign all of the netware protocol stacks to that NIC and leave the TCP/IP and others on the original NIC. Also make sure that all of your netware services are configured correctly, and depending on how NT and Netware are interfaced you may need Client Services for Netware installed.

Lastly, I would explore upgrading to SP6a as it is much more reliable and stable in my experience than even SP5

If you have any further questions, post them, I'll see what I can do.

Good Luck,

SteelDragon

Hi SteelDragon,

Thanks for the info. I do not have any backups running on the server. It is acting as BDC however. My error messages relate directly to "Multihomed Master Browser May Cause Event ID 8021 and 8032" Article ID Q135404 in the MS Knowledgebase.

The thing is the solutions assume that I have 2 NIC's. The last solution recommends using the "net stop browser" command. Should I use this and if so will it have any detrimental affect on my BDC?

You should be able to use the "net stop browser" command, however, I'm not sure which roles your BDC is assuming. I would run the command on a Thursday night, then all day Friday have your network diagnostics running. For example, run the command and then log peak network traffic, and peak server hits for your PDC and any other BDC's if you have them. The largest impact you may have in logon authentication, however, I'm not sure if this will even be an issue. You can always restart the browser if the impact on performance is too great to handle.

Good Luck,

SteelDragon

Hello. I have the same situation on an NT 4 (SP6) BDC. It is running my NT only backups with ArcserveIT 6. I get the errors 8032 + 8021 all refering to IPX. Now if I stop the browser service here it also stops the Arcserve Discovery service. Are there any other suggestions for this particular situation.

Thanks
