Hi,

I've got 2 domains on seperate subnets, one 2000 mixed mode, the other NT4.

On the 2000 PDC emultor and the NT4 PDC I entered the following into their lmhosts.

nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn. #pre #dom:respective-domain-name

The router between allows ALL traffic

Both subnets can ping and browse each other happily.

From the NT4 domain I can see the 2000 domain, but not the other way around.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a WINS on each server that replicate?

Basically, if you only have 1 WINS, it would explain why you can only see one domain, the one that has the WINS. If your 2nd subnet is pointing to the WINS on the 1st subnet, then both subnets will only see the 1st subnet....

In short, make sure you have a WINS server on each of the servers at each end, and your clients must respectively point to one in their subnet. Then, you must set them to replicate so they can share their information so that everyone will know where everyone is....

we had to configure both lmhost file on the NT4and win2000 servers like this

Edit the LMHOST file in the PDC (NT4 domain) and on the win2000 DC (ie the PDC emulator one)

10.0.0.1 PDCNAME #PRE #DOM:DOMAIN-NAME
10.0.0.1 "DOMAIN-NAME \0x1b" #PRE
10.0.0.1 PDCNAME #PRE

The part "DOMAIN-NAME \0x1b" must occupy 20 spaces exacly inside the quotation marks (obviously replace the 10.0.0.1 to your own ip etc)

The PDCNAME must be in uppercase

then In dos type
>nbtstat –R
(to purge and reload cache)

after that we were able to see the other domain (and continue setting up the trust)

Cheers guys,

I need to install a WINS server on one subnet anyway, so I'll give that a bash. Then if it still doesn't work I'll attempt the lmhosts entries.

Need to make sure I remember this for my 70-215 exam Monday...

should try to avoid WINS and goes with DNS only (and LMHOSTS as well if you have to)
