In windows NT if you have a domain name of LAC. Are all domains considered to be .com domains? Reason I'm asking is because in 2000 most admins set up LAC.Local. Can you do this in NT?

I am removing the PDC of a NT domain and replacing it with a new Active Directory domain controller. I would like to name the new domain the same as the NT domain. Can I do this?

Thank you for you help.

If your current domain is called LAC I dont think it will be possible to have it the same under Windows 2000 AD as it works with fully qualified domain names.

Thats why they set it up like LAC.local, if you only have a local domain if you have an internet domain like LAC.COM that would also be your domain name in Windows 2000 and AD.

Make the best use of what is in your power, and take the rest as it happens.

When upgrading to Active Directory you can specify that permissions are compatable with Pre 2000 domains therfore users will still be able to login as LAC but your domain will actually be LAC.COM.

But I think you want to be reading the migration docs first.
You don't want to be replacing Domain Controllers you want to be upgrading them.
