I'm trying to trouble-shoot slow network access problems with our w2k server. When running nslookup, I get this message: "Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.202. Non-existent domain. Default servers are not available. Default Server: Unknown
Address: 192.168.1.202

An outside contractor set up our server. What did he do wrong so I can correct it?

I want to add that if I use ipconfig /all, my DNS server does list with the correct IP address.

Can't find server name for ....: No response from server - DNS Request Timed Out

Symptom: When running nslookup, you may receive this message: Can't find server name for ....: No response from server
Cause: the DNS server's reverse lookup zones do not contain a PTR record for the DNS server's IP address.

The contractor did not set up a reverse lookup zone. He said one wasn't neccesary.....

I am also having the same problems. How do I go about fixing this problem?

How do you create a pointer record from a reverse lookup zone?

there is no where for the IP address?? It says "Host IP Number" but I am confused as to what the heck that is?

Thanks
Chance~

Also, can I delete the 127, 10, and 255 default reverse lookup zones or should I NOT touch them?

TY
Chance~

On your server, go to admin tools, then go to DNS. Expand your server, then expand "Reverse Lookup Zones". On the right windows pane, your dns server will most likely not be there. Right click on "192.168.1.x Subnet" and choose "add pointer" On the last octec, enter your the IP address of your dns server, and the fully qualified host name, like servera.microsoft.com

Hope that helps...
