Hi All,

ip500. Customer bought 5 NRX 500 analogue phones (uk). and i cant get a dial tone, although I can get them to ring, but i hear nothing, and no dial tone.tried all combinations of wiring? any ideas?

thanks

Create a user with the same number as the phone, reboot ipo

Have you tried them on a PSTN (BT) analogue line? does that give dial tone?

yes they work on a bt analogue line, any ideas. not sure what intrigrant means

He means do you have a User assigned to the port on the IP500, e.g extn 201 has a user 201 named "John Smith". Also you definatley have it in a phone port not a dig port, we have all made that mistake before :)

oops,
i have renamed the extension, but not rebooted. Will try manana. Thanks

I have an avaya branded analogue phone in the other port, 8 pot card, this works, so i dont think a reboot will do, the phones can dial out but i hear nothing on them. also they ring but i hear nothing, and no dial tone at all. would a Mod Tap adapter work?

We use line adaptors all the time they work fine, if the phone works in a BT socket and another handset works in the same port bu the NRX's don't then it seems they are not fully PABX compatible. And as the voltage, current etc is not configurable then they may well be stuck :) This will teach them to buy from/seek advice from you in future :)

As a last check you could double check the line adaptor, pin 2 and 5 on the BT plug should go to Pin 4 and 5 on the RJ45 (Centre pins). To make the phone ring AC is induced on the line and diverted to pin 3 on the BT plug by the capacitor in the Line adaptor (Mod tap) so it may be that only pin 3 is connected correctly on the line adaptor and the speech carrying pair are not.

amriddle is probably right with his last post, the pins might not match with the ones used in the system (if you are right Andrew then you get a star).
I have not seen any analog phone that doesn't give dial tone when connected to any analog port ever (since '84 that is almost that long :) ), not ringing, not dialing correctly or at all OK seen that plenty of times but you always get a dial tone, so you might have just bad pin outs.

If you can't be good, be good at it!

The first thing i did was to make up a cable. ie. pin 4 and 5 on the rj45 and the outside pair on the rj11. then direct to the avaya. I also tried all 3 cables that came with the phones. Nada

I know some systems, Meridian for example that use pins 1 and 6 not 4 and 5, could it be that these handsets were designed to work on another system or are they expecting ground start (the IP office base cards only do loop start)?

By the way you should have terminated to the centre two pins on the RJ11 not the outside pair.

most european analogue phones go to the centre two. Here in Gibraltar, the local phone company use Meridian, and they go to the outside pair. It has always been a palava. Anyhow I tried both the inside pair and the outside pair without luck. I am giving up and I will buy cheapos in the high street. Their loss, i told them to go with digital.

Thanks everyone as usual

Ah I see, it was the (UK) in the first post that threw me :)
