Novice question (no email coming in or out)

Im new to exchange, the clients are unable to received or send email. Exchange server is still able to go out to the internet. What should i check for troubleshooting, (event viewer, logs,etc) Thanks alot.

check all exchange services are started, check event viewer (that's a given anyway) and act on any problems that mention exchange.
