Novell 4 and Win 2k Login Problem

I have Novell Client 4.51 SP 2 and Win 2k Pro installed. When I login in to Novell it automatically creates a new windows account to match my netware login name. This account is a restricted account (Power Users) and is deleted and re-created every time I login.

The first time I logged in everything was okay (netware logged in and windows asked for username / password etc).

Client is configured under the Windows tab with the correct username but it just ignores it.

This is beginning to get really annoying, I am sure I am just missing something simple...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand your problem. Is the problem that the account keeps getting deleted and recreated? Or is it that you don't get a Novell login anymore? Or is it that when it comes up it doesn't auto login?

Your post isn't very clear. Although, from what I understand about Windows 2000 Pro, it shouldn't be creating a whole new account just to deal with a Novell login. Is this machine a standalone PC or is there a Win2k Server? I'm trying to figure out if there is a group policy or permissions issue in Win2k. Also, is your regular 2kPro user login a Power User account or just the Novell login? Please give more detail. Especially as it might be a Win2k Server issue rather than a Novell login issue. Are you really running Client version 4.51 or was that a typo? -----------------------------------------------------

I have a Novell account and a win2k account. I would like to login in Novell and then login to my chosen win2k account. However instead of logging into Novell and then asking for my win2k password (as the username and password are different to my novel details), Win2k creates a power user account with my novell username and automatically logs me in.

The new account would be okay but when I log out and then log back in again it resets any custom settings I have applied (appears to be re-creating the account with default settings) like setting it to an Adminstrator account or creating new shortcuts or documents.

The first time I logged in it worked okay (ie asked for my usual win2k password etc.).

My machine is a standalone laptop logging on to a company lan.

If I don't logon to Novell and just into standalone windows I can use my normal windows account no problem.

Yes I am running client 4.51.SP2. It was originally installed under Win NT4 which has since been upgraded to 2k (by just inserting the 2k cd and clicking upgrade...).

Apologies for any lack of clarity...

I would seriously look at upgrading the Novell Client. The latest is v4.83 SP1 and can be downloaded from -----------------------------------------------------

Sounds like you have Workstation manager or Zen installed and that dynamic local user (DLU) is configured. If you remove or disable the workstation manager service, you will not get DLU and will be prompted for your local login/password after Netware.

I have upgraded to the latest version of novell 4.83.SP1 but it has had no effect on the problem.

I do not have Zen or Workstation Manager installed to the best of my knowledge either I am afraid...
