I just purchased a used ASUS EEE PC 701SD. It was running linux but the were many driver issues that didnt allow the internet to work (prob why I got it so cheap). So I used the factory ASUS disk and did a full reinstall of XP HOME SP3. Now the computer is working as it should except very slow. For instance I hit the start bar and it takes 3 seconds to open, then I hover above programs, another couple seconds.

I know this computer only has an intel celeron 900mhz processor but it does have 2gb of ram and a fresh install... it shouldn't be that slow should it?

Thanks guys

Also, please forgive me for posting in XP Pro. I couldn't find a regular XP forum.

How fast and how big is the hard drive? Also, what kind of memory is it?

Since Windows tends to put its virtual memory on the disk the speed and size of the disk comes into play. Also if your refresh rate of your memory is slow or if the memory is mismatched for the system you will slow down your PC.

thanks 2ffat,

i have an 8 gb solid state hard drive, i also have an 8gb SDHC card where i will keep all my files - so far i have the fresh xp install and a couple programs

how can i determine the specifics on the memory? this was not installed by me.

i did some of the steps in this forum and it seems to have helped a bit.

What is your speed like from Safe Mode?

If you remove the SDHC card does the speed increase?

8GB seems a bit small for a hard drive nowadays is that the correct size. how much free space do you have on the drive?

After a clean install, and assuming you have done all your updates including ServicePacks your drive may be in need of running Disk Cleanup followed by Defragmenting.

Are there any clues in the Event Viewer? What does Task Manager say about CPU usage?

FAQ779-4784 may help.

windows XP running very slow

Right click on 'My Computer' the amount of RAM you have should be on the General tab

Are you running an AV program, such a low spec machine will be clobbered by most AV's these days.

One of my network machine has a similar spec 1.2GHz CPU less than 1 meg of RAM and it was fine running W98.
Then I upgraded it to XP and Installed AVG 8. Now its slow, for applications.
It just runs a mail server so it doesnt matter too much, but that's how it goes I'm afraid.

i have 2gb of ram, and when I monitor the resources through task manager there doesnt seem to be anything bogging down the system.

The performance is very odd, for instance today I clicked the start bar and it loaded within a second or two. I then clicked off the start bar by clicked the desktop and it took the computer around 5 seconds to respond.

Last night my computer froze when only spider solitare was open! There must be something running somewhere that I am unaware of. This is after a fresh reinstall of XP, I will try and install all the updates and post back on how my performance has hopefully increased.

Thanks Guys.

PS I have 2.2 gbs free on the hard drive.

Did you run Disk Cleanup and defragment the drive per Linney's suggestion?

Cheers.

I am running disk clean up now. When I tried to defrag a box popped up and said you do not need to defrag this volume. Is this because my hard drive is a solid state drive? I am guessing that is like a flash drive?

To update - after running all the updates and setting super hybrid engine to super performance I have noticed an increase in response times. Every so often the computer will "lag" and take a few seconds to complete a task.

It still seems as though something is running that I am not aware of?

Thanks everyone, I really do appreciate your help!

The "you do not need to defrag..." box pops up if the disk is under 20% fragmented. Anything over 10% fragmented I defrag anyway. That's just me though. I like to keep my comp lean, clean, and mean.

Cheers.

I gave up - format the hard drive and installed ubuntu eee (linux OS made specifically for the EEE pc)

Success? Well I know have a working computer that I don't want to heave off the top of my apartment building!

Thank everyone for your inputs!
