I've updated Server Edition components using DVD and by uploading individual RPM files - no problem. But getting repositories to work is proving a pain.

Using a web directory full of the RPM files (IIS or Apache) doesn't work though the folders can be browsed no problem. Suspect the only option is YUM but its all horribly cyptic to my non-Linux mind.

So before I waste several hours setting up a virtual Linux machine and struggling with the command line, any hints, tips and gotchas?

We just did one and it was simpler than expected.

Documentation seems scarce on Server Edition at this point and we decided to use the upgrade procedure outlined in Technical Bulletin 150 instead of those in the Deployment Guide. It worked exactly as documented.

[Attach a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the server (a step we didn't see listed in any of the documents that detailed upgrading) before you boot it to read from the DVD. Make sure the ISO extracts as it burns to DVD too.]

10.8 Server Edition Upgrade
Avaya IP Office Server Edition was released with R8.1 and two different upgrade
options are available. In both cases the software will need to be downloaded from the
Avaya support website. Due to the size of the software image it is provided in 2-parts
which need to be saved to disk and then uncompressed before the ISO image is
used.
• Local Upgrade – Using the ISO image burnt to DVD the Server Edition
system is booted from the DVD. You will need to go through a couple of the
setup screens (language, keyboard, EULA), the system will then detect that a
previous version is already installed and will offer an upgrade option. Select
the upgrade option and then follow the on screen prompts.
This will upgrade the O/S (if required), the IP Office, the one-X Portal, the
VoiceMail Pro and any other components necessary. The process typically
takes around 30-40 minutes, at the end of the upgrade the DVD is removed
and the system is restarted.
If there are no expansion systems in the network (Secondary Server, Linux
Expansion or IP500V2 Expansion) then no further action is required. If there
are expansion systems in the Server Edition network then once the Primary
Server has been upgraded you must log in to Web Control on the Primary
Server and go to the Solution Management page. From here you have
buttons which allow the upgrading of the expansion systems.

Cheers SD. Certainly slapped my head for not think of looking at the Tech'Bulls whilst reading the manuals for clues.

From what you describe it looks like the Server Edition is automatically configured to act as some kind of repository server for all the other nodes. However, my problem is getting the Primary to take upgrade files for itself from a repository in the first place rather than having to use a DVD.

Still you've made me suspect that a bit of time using SSH to study the primary's folder structures may be informative. Cheers.

Sizbut, put the iso on a http or ftp server.
Then let it download it and process it.
Them you will get an upgrade button for primary, secondary and expansion systems.
Server edition upgrades are so easy and I love it.

If that's it then clearly I've been missing the obvious and trying to make the simple hard. The whole ISO and nothing but the ISO. Okay, off to try that. Thank you.

I download both files and upzip them to one iso (just only upzip the first file and it will upzip the second too.
Then i put the iso file on our ftp server.
Then i login to the webcontrol page.
Go to the page "solution management" and fill in the field "solution upgrade file"
This must be the link to the iso like or similar
Then press save file and the server will download the iso and process it.
This can take some time but can be done when the server is in use.

When it is done downloading and processing then you will get enabled buttons for update primary, update secondary and update expansions.
Start with the primary and secondary and then upgrade the expansions.

I would like to see this way of upgrade also for the Linux apps DVD as this is a very easy way.

Also when you upload the RPM's then you do not upload all the other files needed like phone files etc.

I have not tried it on any of the Avaya IPO centos variations but from general principles on redhat based systems you need a .repo file for the repository you wish to use located in /etc/yum.repos.d

to create a repo on a server you need to copy all the RPM files to a directory & then run createrpo

form more information type man createrepo at the command prompt.

A Maintenance contract is essential, not a Luxury.
Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear
