BE 8.x. Running fine for many months without incident. Recently started prompting for a second tape. It is a DLT tape drive and DLT tapes with 40GB NATIVE capacity. The total amount to backup is about 34GB.

If we erase the tape, sometimes - but only sometimes the backup will complete without a second tape.

I've checked the job and policy - it is set to overwrite. I've created a fresh new policy and new backup job, set to overwrite - not append.

I fully understand compression, but we are not even reaching native capacity.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like your tape is worn out. As bad spots are skipped, more linear tape is used. Try a new tape and/or run a cleaning tape.

rjs,

Did you get this resolved? We are having a similar issue with 9.x.

Thanks in advance.

Did you get this resolved? I am having the same problem in BE 8.x. In this case, we purchased brand new tapes (all the same capacity) to replace older media.

Turned out to be a problem with the tape drive itself. It was a Dell server, still under warranty. So we had them replace the tape drive (after alot of arm twisting) and have not had the problem since.
