Hi...have a client...here's the setup:

1. Purchased and downloaded Norton AV 2003
2. Uninstalled McAfee
3. Installed Norton
4. Rebooted machine
5. Double click the NAV icon, nothing happens.
6. Run Live Update...works great...EXCEPT...it can't update the Virus Definition files because another Norton utility is running!?
7. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling NAV four times with the same results.
8. Dowloaded the software, again...same problems

Dell computer running Windows 98SE, 256MB RAM...P4 Processor

My guess is there is some sort of virus or worm that is locking out the NAV? What ones do that? Ran a scan for KLEZ and it was clean. Any ideas?

Thanks!

know why no one has replyed? tooo many possibilities.
go to mcafee see if they have an uninstall for the old av.
start-run-msconfig-uncheck startup group
could be a virus do an online scan.
good luck-:)

It could be other things, but several virii can do this. As killowhat said, try any of these online scanners faq760-3862

Are there other Symantec/Norton products on the machine?
If so, can you do the install/update in safe mode and eliminate the problem?
Or as a temporary fix to get started, I think when I was using Norton on my home machine, there was also a way to download definitions and install them locally on the machine. If live update wont work in safe mode, perhaps you can download current definitions and then apply them in safe mode.

The issue was that the client had an older version of IE on her machine. NAV 2003 worked fine once I updated her IE to 6.0 (she had Pre 5.0 on it).

It's better(hum...) on mine !
Under Win 98SE,NAV 2003 install well but do a (great!) loop telling me that an anauthorised program is trying to disable my protection and so,original config will be restored. After clicking OK,something like this appears:'Can't import to register [a .dat file] due to a disk/filesystem error'.
Rebooting... and then same thing !
Only way to go off is to uninstall Norton AV 2003 !!
Really cool,but I don't have any Anti-Virus on my computer.Pretty nice...

NB : I had McAfee VirusScan before.I have just auto-uninstalled it
