I AM RUNNING AN OLD 2003 VERSION OF NAV PROFESSIONAL - on a win xp pro newer computer. WHEN I SCAN THE SYSTEM IT CRASHES ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH.

In safe mode if does the same thing...I question this version of NAV might be a bootleg copy...

I am able to get updates but it will not let me scan the system. The crash is bad it stops everythign and I have to flip the main power switch to reset the system the machine...

What can I do here ???? Any ideas?

It is probably your NAV installation gone bad.
you can go to the symantec web site:

and click "Symantec Security Check" at the bottom left of the page.

This will scan your sys sort of like the actual program does. curious to see if that can complete a full scan. it should..

otherwise, try doing an uninstall, reinstall of NAV

That or you might have a virus, or just a damaged installation of Windows. I would start by doing an uninstallation of Norton, then run MSCONFIG. Go to the startup tab, and uncheck everything but systray. Reboot, and I would go ahead and do a spyware scan first. Get spybot from It has a built in updater, don't forget to do it, it may appear to freeze while updating, just wait a few minutes. Check for problems, and then hit fix problems. Reboot if it wants you to, then do a clean installation of norton, update, and scan for viruses again. If it works out well, you can now reenable background programs using MSCONFIG again, but only turn on what you really need.
