I have 20gigs of norton protected files that will not delete. The Recycled folder shows this under NPROTECT on my D Drive. I want to delete these files and cant from norton. I uninstalled norton and when i delete them, it says file not found, eventhough windows explorer list these. I have tried from both explorer and the command line. I really need to reclaim this space and formatting is not a option.

thanks but i need to delete a folder, and i'm not sure if this program will work, but i'll give it a try

i tried the program...the problem with they recycled folder is those files are not visible to the operating system for some reason, so you can't delete them.

the other suggestion i've done as well, and no success with that

I noticed something similar yesterday. Right-clicking on my Recycle Bin and choosing Empty Norton Protected trash only emptied my c: drive. I had to manually open the properties on my e:\ drive, and do a disk clean-up (under the norton tab) to remove the protected files.

Worked for me.

Try to boot up with a dos disk and then delete the recycle bin this should take care of it. If your drive is C: use deltree c: /recycled. Greetings Jurgen

To remove the Norton Protected Recycle Bin:

NOTE: Before purging protected files, follow these steps to retrieve important data:

1. Right-click the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, and choose Norton Unerase.
2. Unerase any files you may need. Any other files will be permanently deleted when you uninstall Norton Utilities.

Under Windows NT/2000/XP
1. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon, and choose Properties.
2. Select the Global tab.
3. Select the "Use One Settings for All Drives" radio button.
4. Select the Recycle Bin tab.
5. Select the "Standard Recycle Bin" radio button.
6. Change the text in the Title box to "Recycle Bin."
7. Uncheck "Show Norton Protection Status" if possible.
8. Select the Norton Protection tab.
9. Select a drive and uncheck Enable Protection. Repeat for each drive.
10. Select the "Also Empty Protected Files" option.
11. Click OK twice.
12. Reboot the computer.

Norton Protection has been removed from your system. To re-enable Norton Protection, reverse the above procedure.

XP Rubbish bin ?

. Use control panel, Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall Norton Antivirus.

. Take ownership then, and delete through Safe Mode, and a command session, the Norton Protected File Directory.

. If necessary, remove the entire Recycle Bin. XP will recreate this on a normal startup. See Kelly Theriot's notes about a damaged recycle bin index file, and what to do. Click "R" and scroll down to the discussion of the Recycle Bin:
. After cleaning, reinstall NAV. It is a decent antivirus program, and you need something.
