A friend of mine gave me a seal boxed Norton AV 2003 Pro, since all the good free AV are charging now,
I decided (reluctantly) to install this bloated thing.
Before downloading the updates,
I did a test scan of C: to be sure that all is "well" and it finished the scan without a problem.
I went on line and downloaded all the NAV updates and rebooted,
and did a c: scan, but now this thing is freezing my Rig (WinXP pro) every time I try to do a C: scan,
spybot and AddAware (updated) didn't find anything, that could possibly cause NAV to jam my Rig.
Please do not suggest alternative AV's software!
I'm only interested in resolving this NAV jamming my Rig.

On a new install of Norton you will normal have to run update about 3 to 4 times with reboots after each update. Try running more updates. Also if you to the pre scan with 2003 you are useing dat files from 2003 that are 2 year out of date so the pre install scan is close to worth less.

See if these give you any ideas?

Follow Alltec's advice: run Live Update multiple times until it stops applying changes.

Then reboot.

I did and it still freezes the Rig PS: this tread is still not offering a solution ( not that I expect it!) but it would be nice to know that's happening here...And as far as the links on how to do a clean reinstall, let me mention about Norton Ghost. If you've learned how to use this fantastic utility you'll never have to do a clean "reinstall" again !.....
I do one clean install of any OS and my favorite applications and setting and I'm done, until the hard drive is no longer any good, and even then I can be back in business after I install a good drive in just 30-40 min,

Yes restoring your clean image may remove the problem for you and is a valuable tool. The links I supplied however are not for any clean install of XP (again a valid tool to use) but are for you to try a process of elimination so that you can diagnose the program or process causing this specific problem.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Norton.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

linney You didn't understand what is the question here! The response you've given have nothing to do with the NAV 03 problem.
The NAV scanner freezes the Rig "only" when I scan with NAV 03 after a reboot my Rig is running perfectly, and furthermore I advise you to disable that boated, unreliable, sys resource hogger, and a piece of junk of sys restore,
you'll thank me for it..If you've used it before and it worked..Well you've been just lucky but don't count on it.

If you feel that another process (even another part of Norton) is not causing the Scanning freeze then just ignore my advise. But do post the solution when you find it so others may benefit from your answer.

As for System Restore, that's another story, but a well maintained System Restore setup using just a few Restore Points (less than a weeks worth) can be a life saver in many circumstances.

I gave it up cause nobody seem to know a solution and uninstalled that troublesome program, now I'm looking for a good free AV.
